Alas, Jack is potty-trained! I totally forgot to mention this a month ago when it happened. My favorite thing right now is his cute little bum in big-kid undies. :)
Basically two weeks before we were to leave for Hawaii, Jack came to us before bed with a pair of underwear in his hands, asking if we’d put it on him. He was asking us to potty-train him. Tyler and I gulped. Should we actually attempt to potty-train him less than two weeks before a HUGE (two-week) vacation where we were leaving him with my mom? That’s awfully, rude, right?
But we did it anyway. And succeeded.
Jack basically potty-trained himself. He really just took the initiative this time around and it was quick and painless. We had one morning of accidents around the house (I’m really thankful for wood floors!) but by the afternoon he pretty much had it down. This isn’t to say we haven’t had our fair share of accidents in the past month – he’s only two, after all. But there’s no fighting to get him to sit on the toilet, and he almost completely takes himself now.
If you remember, I tried to teach him a year ago, right after his 2nd birthday. He did great and was pretty much trained for a whole month until we went out of town for Thanksgiving. Then he regressed and after two weeks of fighting him, I gave up. Our relationship was already tender and delicate because we had just lost Amelia, and it wasn’t something worth fighting about.
The biggest difference this time was that he actually TELLS me when he needs to go. When he had just turned two, he barely had any words, and “potty” was definitely not one of them. So in addition to it being HIS idea this time, speech has helped immensely.
We’re still working on it all, but I honestly rarely have to worry about him. If we go somewhere and there isn’t a bathroom, he holds it until we get home. He’s only had probably two or three accidents in public. I’m seriously so proud of this little boy of mine. It’s been so exciting for me as a parent to finally see him thrive in this world because his speech skills are developing! Go my sweet boy, go. The world is yours for the taking. :)
