After all of the fuss about The King’s Speech, Tyler and I decided to watch it. I don’t claim to be the movie-reviewing type, so if you don’t want to read about it, we’ll just settle for giving it a two thumbs-up. :)
As Mormons we are encouraged to seek wholesome entertainment. It’s not easy in today’s society. Let’s face it: 99.9% of the time R-rated movies don’t fall into the “wholesome and good” category (as defined by our religion). But after research on lds.org, I found guidance from Kieth W. Merrill, Academy Award-winning motion picture director:
Ultimately, there is no rating system that will satisfy every person’s individual standards. It remains for each of us to sort through word-of-mouth reports, media reviews, publicity, and then compare what we find with our own conscience. The only reliable standards are the ones we set for ourselves, guided by our quest for perfection and inspired by the principles of the gospel.
So based on word-of-mouth reviews, we went ahead and watched it. It was brilliant. (I now understand why it reigned the Oscars, winning four out of the twelve it was nominated for.) I was shocked at how clean the film was, aside from one scene which we skipped over. But I loved the storyline and setting the most – it was set in the 1930s and they did a beautiful job with transporting you back in time. The acting was very, very impressive, the overall message was really neat and I highly recommend it. Tyler and I don’t buy movies very often, but this will definitely be one we will purchase!
