The cups will allow a drop (not kidding on the drop part) out every couple of minutes, but it's not bad. If Soph throws them with some force (as in, a tantrum), the lid pops up a bit, but it doesn't explode off. There has to be force behind it, though, for the lid to come off like that.

Good to know, Jess! I've seen the toss ones - we used to use those take & toss spoons. Are the cups leak-proof? That's our main concern. I think I can teach him to stop being lazy and tilt the cup, but I want him to be able to do it himself, anytime he needs water. Thus, it needs to be leakproof because it's always on the floor wherever he's playing!

Careful with cleaning the Platex ones--we had those for a while and cleaned them after every use, but the straw still got slimy and gross. We had had pretty good luck with the cheap toss-and-go ones (they're actually very durable, so we just wash and reuse). They are sippy cups, and Soph had the same deal as Jack, but she liked mixing and matching the lids, so they became fun to use.
